From Millionaire to Broke to FIRE in 9 Years

What happens when someone becomes a millionaire at 18, loses it by 19, builds businesses, opens restaurants by accident, survives bad investments, and somehow ends up financially independent years earlier than planned?

That is the story of Seven Chan in episode 50 of the Nomad Summit Podcast.

Recorded in person in Da Nang, Vietnam, Christoph Huebner and Alexandra sit down with Seven to talk about FIRE – Financial Independence, Retire Early – and why it has become such a powerful idea in the digital nomad community.

What Is FIRE – And Why Do Nomads Care?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. But as Seven explains, it is not necessarily about never working again. It is about freedom.

“It’s just the concept of being financially free and not necessarily having to work. You can still work, you can still make money, and you can still pursue different passions, but you're just not obligated by survival.”

For digital nomads, that idea hits home. Nomad life is already about flexibility, freedom, and designing a life outside the standard script. FIRE takes that a step further by asking: What if you were not just location independent, but financially independent too?

    Millionaire at 18 – Broke at 19

Seven’s story does not begin with a perfect investment plan or a spreadsheet full of compound interest projections.

    It starts with a rollercoaster.

“I was first a millionaire by the time I was 18, and then no longer a millionaire by the time I was 19.”

That line alone tells you this is not a typical “save 20% of your income and buy index funds” kind of story.

Seven had money early. He also lost money early. Then he made money again. And lost it again. He describes being a millionaire and not a millionaire three or four times in his life.

Real estate, Bitcoin, houses, businesses – he tried a lot of things that looked smart at the time. But as he puts it:

“Every decision I seem to make, even though it's the right decision at the time, is the wrong, most horrible decision ever.”

The Restaurant He Opened by Accident

One of the wildest parts of Seven’s story is how he ended up in the restaurant business.

After selling an e-commerce company, he went to real estate school. There, someone casually asked if he wanted to start a restaurant.

“My partner or my friend in real estate school was like, Hey, you wanna start a restaurant? And I'm like, sure. I dunno. Yeah, why not?”

That casual “why not” led to a tiny food hall space, a three-week deadline, a refrigerator from Home Depot, and a sushi counter.

Then Seven did what entrepreneurs do. He figured out how to get attention.

“So by day three, we had a line of two, 300 people outside every single day.”

Within a year and a half, the restaurant had become one of the most award-winning in the city’s history. Eventually, they sold around 30 franchises across the country.

Not bad for something that started with an Uber driver tip and a “sure, why not?”

But Success Was Not the Same as Freedom

From the outside, the restaurant story sounds like a dream. But Seven quickly realized that building a successful business does not automatically mean building the life you want.

“I tell people like I'm not a king. I'm a conqueror. I don't like to sit like on a throne and manage things or deal with people all the time. 'cause that drives me crazy.”

    That is an important distinction.

Some people love running what they build. Others love the challenge of building it, winning, and moving on to the next thing.

Seven is clearly in the second category.

    Discovering FIRE Changed the Game

Seven discovered FIRE around seven or eight years ago. What he found was not a secret trading strategy or a magic shortcut. In fact, it was almost the opposite.

FIRE taught him to stop gambling, stop chasing trends, and stop thinking he needed to be an expert in everything.

“The biggest impact was that fire taught me how to invest my money in a way that wasn't gambling or trading or like I had to be an expert at anything.”

He shifted toward a more hands-off investing strategy, focused on long-term growth instead of constant action.

    Then came the test.

Putting Everything In Right Before COVID

Seven put almost all of his money into the market just before COVID hit.

“I put almost all my money in three days right before COVID hit. And then within that three days, like almost my entire net worth dropped over six figures.”

That is the kind of moment where a lot of people panic.

Seven almost did too. But instead of selling, he reached out to others in the FIRE community. They told him to wait.

    He did.

    And the money came back.

More than that, it showed him how powerful long-term investing could be when he stopped trying to outsmart everything.

“I had a 27 year fire plan that ended up being nine years.”

Why Community Matters in Financial Independence

One of the most interesting parts of this episode is that Seven is not just living the FIRE lifestyle. He is building FIRE communities.

He has hosted FIRE meetups in different cities around the world, and in Da Nang, the community has been much bigger than he expected.

“Here, like every event pretty much sells out or packs out. And it's 20 people, RSVP and like 40 people show up and I'm like, I don't know what to do, but it's super cool.”

The events are not about selling a course or pretending to be a guru. Seven describes himself more as a moderator than a teacher.

People show up at different stages: beginners, people close to FIRE, and people who have already reached it.

What Happens After You Reach FIRE?

This is where the conversation gets especially interesting.

Reaching FIRE does not affect everyone the same way. According to Seven, it often depends on how people got there.

Some worked hard, saved consistently, and are now happy relaxing. Some made it through real estate. Others through trading or crypto. But former entrepreneurs often struggle more with doing nothing.

“We're the people that like, don't know what to do when we're fired. And we're like, we gotta keep doing stuff where everyone else seems to be like, oh, okay. I reached my goal, I'm happy and now I get to relax.”

That is the paradox of freedom. Once you no longer have to work, you still have to decide what kind of life you actually want.

Da Nang, Vietnam – A FIRE-Friendly Nomad Hub?

Seven has traveled widely, but Da Nang has become one of his favorite bases in Asia.

Part of it is practical. It is affordable, easy to get around, and has a growing nomad scene. But the bigger reason is the community.

“My favorite things here are really compared to all the places in Southeast Asia is won the price for sure. But I would say just as importantly, or more importantly is like the community here is, I would say, different and special.”

He compares Da Nang with places like Bali, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, and says Da Nang has its own mix of short-term nomads, long-term residents, people building things, and people discovering what they want next.

“Here's a good mix of like short-term people, long-term people, and a lot of people that are both discovering themself and what they're doing and building what they're doing and already established.”

    The Comforts of Nomad Life

Of course, it is not all spreadsheets and investment strategies.

The episode also gets into some of the very real, very human comforts nomads care about – air conditioning, soft beds, shower curtains, and affordable meals.

Seven jokes that Americans are delicate when it comes to temperature.

“I think for most west us people we need good air condition.”

And after spending time in Asia, going back to Europe can suddenly feel very fancy.

“When I go back there, like after being in Asia, it feels like everything is like bougie and luxury, which I love.”

Why This Episode Is Worth Listening To

This episode is not a step-by-step FIRE guide. It is better than that.

It is a real story about money, mistakes, timing, business, community, and figuring out what freedom actually means after you get it.

Seven’s journey is messy, funny, surprising, and very human. He has made money, lost money, built things, walked away from things, and found a lifestyle that gives him the freedom to keep exploring.

And for anyone in the digital nomad world, that question is worth asking:

Are you building a life that gives you freedom – or just another version of work with a nicer view?
